Feeling Stuck in a Work Rut? How to Get Out

June 21, 2021

We’ve all been there. We wake up, we go to work, we go through the motions. Every. Single. Day. It’s wash, rinse, repeat motion that has many of us feeling stuck in a rut.

How do I know?

I’ve been right where you are.

I was in a job that many people would have dreamed about…everyone except for me. I realized that I no longer loved, not even liked, getting up in the morning to go to my “dream job”. I realized that I had to do something because I was young and I didn’t want to live every day like this.

What did I do?

I started to cast my net as I like to say to see what areas I really liked. Could I see these things as my job? I didn’t know. But I did know that I needed to look into them all and give them all a fair chance.

That’s my first piece of advice to you if you’re finding yourself in a rut. You need to make a list of all the things that interest you to see if you could turn any one of them into a career. To do this, you’ll need to talk to people in the field, shadow people in the field, and see what really gets you excited.

If you choose something and it just doesn’t do it for you, it’s okay! That’s why you’ve made a list. Move down to the next item and try that one on for size. The goal is to find your niche.

Now, I understand that not everyone can quit their jobs and jump onto the next big thing. Many of us have to keep chugging along at our non-dream jobs while we explore our other possibilities. I know the struggle is real. But, I also know the struggle is worth it. In the end, you’ll find what you were meant to do.

How do you know you’ve found your passion?

You’ll find yourself happier and engaged in what you’re doing.

You’ll find that you actually love what you do.

You’ll find yourself looking for ways to advance in your career.

Most importantly, you’ll find yourself happier.

Isn’t that what it’s all about? Finding happiness and fulfillment?

I believe it is, that’s why I always encourage people to pursue their passion no matter how tough the road is.

When you’re happier at your job, you’re happier all-around. You don’t feel like you have a gray cloud over you. You feel like you can do anything and you do! Doesn’t that sound amazing? I think that’s what everyone eventually wants. No one wants to feel like they’re stuck in a rut. They want to feel inspired and happy.

If my words have inspired you, then I encourage you to start chasing your dream job.

Remember, you got this and only you can make it happen.
